How to go about building a website for your business or organization.
1. You need a domain - eg. 'www.mybusinesssite.com'. These are easy to purchase, can be purchased by yourself or someone can do it for you. These normally cost from 15 to 30 for 2 years.
2. You need a place (in other words a machine on the internet) to host your website. So you need to find a company or freelancer that sells hosting. This is easy to do. Also, your domain and hoting dont have to be purchased at the same place, but it is more convenient. Also, you want to get your hosting local to where your business/customers are located. Otherwise you website might load slowly when people browse through it.
3. You need someone to make your website. This can be a high profile web design company charging up to 50 thousand dollers or a mid level boutique or even a freelancer. The bottom line is that you want someone you can trust and work with. Freelancers/web boutiques are the cheapest - just make sure they have some programming experience. Students are really cheap but you end up going somewhere else after being dis-satisfied and have wasted time and some cash. You want someone friendly and who you can phone anytime day or night to solve something for you.
4. There are two types of websites. One is what is called a static website. This needs the web designer to make any changes for you. The second type is a content management system (or CMS). These are as easy for the developer to build, but you get the added benifit of being able to log in and change things on your site. You can start off by changing things like price lists or descriptions. As your knowledge grows you can start adding pictures, banners and whatever else takes your fancy. Or, you can train someone in your business, (like a secretary or girlfriend) to do this for you. You can still use your web designer to do the hard stuff :)
Anyway, good luck with your website!
