Sometimes people who are looking for a website are quite put off by the price.
Here are some of the factors that go into building a website.
1. A physical place must be created for a client website. An account must be set up, emails, account settings like hard-drive space and bandwidth and so on.
2. If any software and databases that support the web site need to be installed, this can take some time.
3. Then the clients needs are analyzed and collected (visits, phone calls, emails).
4. If an existing website template is used this is quickish. If a whole new custom site template (pictures and layout) is wanted then this can take more time. Just making one logo can take hours - especially if the client is picky. Imagine a largish client with multiple graphics - endless hours of work.
5. Then there is the actual adding of the site content - the text and buttons and links in all the right places.
6. Then, in the background the web developer has to go through all the pages on the site adding the correct keywords in all over the place so that search engines can find the website. This is called search engine optimization (SEO).
7. The web development work is often done on a developers local machine and the finished product may have to be transferred multiple times to the public site.
8. This whole design process may iterate many times as the client and the web designer iron out any changes needed.
9. Sometimes the software the web programmer is using does not behave as it should (bugs) and he or she has to spend time scouring the internet for solutions to the problem or delving deeply into someone elses code.
10. Unseen work, - like backups, administration, travel costs, marketing and hosting costs and so on all add up in the background.
